Our thoughts on 2022 NFL rookie quarterback Sam Howell.

Measurables:

  • 6' 218 lbs.

  • Completed only drills at the Combine and his Pro Day.

  • 95th percentile yards-per-attempt.

  • 91st percentile breakout age.

  • 6th in Average Depth of Target.

"He’s the hardest worker on the team; just gets it - Head Coach Mack Brown"

Strengths:

  • Howell has above-average arm strength and can throw from any platform.

  • He drives the ball accurately with good mechanics.

  • Sam has an exceptional deep ball and displays excellent touch.

  • He is very composed under pressure, and he doesn’t get rattled with rushers in his face.

  • Last season on third downs, he recorded a 69.9 completion percentage, 9.8 yards per attempt, and eight touchdowns with zero interceptions.

  • As an athletic and mobile quarterback, he has enough speed to beat defenders.

  • Sam Howell has a passing touchdown in every college game. His 92 career touchdowns are the most ever in ACC for a quarterback who played three years or less, beating out Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence.

  • He set the North Carolina state record for passing yards in high school and was an all-state baseball player.

Weaknesses:

  • At six-foot, he is shorter than you would like for an ideal quarterback.

  • He can get hung up on reads and tips his hand to defenders. A reason could be because North Carolina led the nation in run-pass option plays.

  • Like many fantasy quarterbacks, his dropback footwork needs improvement.

  • After losing several weapons, he played hero ball in 2021, resulting in him looking to take off and run prematurely.

  • He takes on big hits that were potentially avoidable, but he had 65 broken tackles in 2021.

  • Howells's touchdowns decreased every season from 38 to 30 to 24, and his passing yards went down 500 yards on one less attempt. He lost all of his weapons in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Drunk Thoughts

Sam Howell looks the part of an NFL quarterback but is potentially undersized to have long-term success. Quarterbacks in this class will drop far enough in your rookie drafts that there is little risk in taking a chance on any of these quarterbacks. I am entirely comfortable taking Howell in the second round of rookie drafts. We saw Davis Mills have a reasonably productive rookie campaign as a third-round pick. Sam Howell could have some of the same buzz we are seeing with Mills in his sophomore year but with more rushing upside.
