Our thoughts on 2022 NFL rookie Wide Receiver Khalil Shakir.

Measurables:

  • 6' 196 lbs

  • 4.43 40-yard dash

  • 34.5" Vertical jump

  • 10'4" Broad jump

  • 95th percentile target share

Strengths:

  • Shakir is a polished route runner that uses timing and hesitation to fool and shake loose defenders.

  • He is a natural hands catcher and catches the ball in stride.

  • 75.3% of his receptions went for either a first down or touchdown.

  • Khalil has a quick first step helping him escape press coverage or get past defenders after the catch.

  • If he doesn't get by a defender, he is tough and can take hits over the middle.

  • He averaged eight yards per punt return and 23.8 yards per kick return.

  • Shakir has some versatility with 71 carries and five pass attempts in his career.

  • Pro Football Focus gave Shakir the 8th best-receiving grade in 2020 and the 10th best in 2021.

Weaknesses:

  • He lacks ideal long speed and is more of a quick player than a fast player. On tape, he looks slower than 40-yard time suggests.

  • We didn't see him create a ton of missed tackles.

  • There is some worry that NFL corners will out-muscle him in his routes due to his shorter arms, and he needs to add some bulk to his frame.

  • He tends to trap the ball or run before the ball has been secured.

  • Khalil finished with the same number of career drops as touchdowns: 20 each.

Drunk Thoughts

Khalil Shakir has some special teams experience and attributes that should help him see the field early but will likely be buried on the depth chart. At best, Shakir is probably the number four wide receiver in Buffalo, and that doesn't factor in Dawson Knox. There is real potential down the road, but consistent usage may not happen until year two or three. His road to productivity could be shorter if he can make a splash on special teams in his rookie year. Shakir is worth a late-round pick and a taxi squad stash in your rookie drafts.
