Our thoughts on 2022 NFL rookie wide receiver John Metchie.

  • 5’11" 187 lbs

  • 9.25" hands

  • 30 5/8" arms

  • 6’1" wingspan

"This guy is the epitome of what you look for in a wide receiver. He is tough, he plays hurt. He gets open, he makes catches, he makes plays." Head Coach Nick Saban

  • Metchie transitions his weight well with little wasted motion and adjusts his speed to set up and beat defensive backs.

  • He has a wide variety of releases to evade press coverage and establish leverage while being slippery after the catch.

  • Consistently hand-catches the ball outside of his frame.

  • He grades well as a blocker and takes pride in his work when he doesn't have the ball.

  • He can play all over the formation and has had great production the last two seasons.

  • Scouts tout his character, and he is extremely well-liked in Alabama.

  • 6.4% of his receptions went for a first down or a touchdown as a sophomore.

  • He occasionally suffers from concentration drops and is looking to run before securing the ball.

  • He had an explosive debut as a starter with two receptions of 50 plus yards in his first game but none in the following 196 targets.

  • Outside of his sophomore campaign, he had a below-average touchdown rate, with a touchdown every 10.3 receptions in college.

  • Most of the concern seems to be around his medical history. Metchie played through ankle and shin injuries that required surgeries and then tore his ACL.

Drunk Thoughts

Why are people more worried about his injuries? Jameson Williams may not even play in 2022 but is being drafted sooner. John Metchie might have average size and speed, but he is a great route runner and will be a solid number two receiver when healthy. He does everything you want an NFL wide receiver to do, and he won't face stiff competition for playing time. The return on investment is likely better than most people might think, especially if Davis Millis can take another step forward.
