Our thoughts on 2022 NFL rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson.

Measurables:

  • 5'10.5" 187 lbs., 181 lbs. at his Pro Day.

  • 4.43 forty-yard dash.

  • 36” vertical, 10’1” broad jump.

  • 95th percentile target share.

  • 90th percentile college dominator.

"Jahan Dotson should should shoot up draft boards. If you want him, you will need to go get him."

Strengths:

  • Dotson displays his speed at all times and excels at double-moves resulting in him being open downfield.

  • His twitchy lower body helps him separate at the line of scrimmage.

  • Jahan has strong hands. He finished 2021 with only two drops on 138 targets.

  • He tracks the ball well and attacks the ball like a larger receiver despite being 5'11".

  • Ten of his 21 career touchdowns came on receptions of 40-plus yards.

  • He plays all over the field, including two seasons as a punt returner averaging 14 yards per return.

  • Dotson finished second in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns at Penn State.

  • A true track star in high school, winning state championships in 4x100 relay and long jump combined with regional state titles in the 100m and 200m.

  • He has a huge catch radius and stretches out to bail out his quarterback by finding empty space or catching poorly thrown balls.

  • When targeted, his quarterback had a 119 quarterback rating.

  • In 2021, he tied three other receivers for the most 20-plus-yard catches with 11.

Weaknesses:

  • Dotson is just another receiver that needs to add on to his frame as he can be knocked off his route by defenders.

  • His size might be the reason for his low success rate on contested balls.

  • Occasionally, Dotson uses his body instead of his hands to finish a catch.

  • Despite his separation skills, we are surprised he didn’t force more missed tackles.

Drunk Thoughts

If you are looking for a late first-round wide receiver, there may be no better option than Jahan Dotson. Coaches will find a way to get him on the field. His ability to play inside and outside, combined with his experience on special teams, means he will be a fantasy contributor as a rookie. He indeed can be a star wide receiver. Don't draft him at your peril.
