Our thoughts on 2022 dynasty fantasy football rookie Jelani Woods.

Jelani Woods, Tight End for Virginia, had a pretty successful combine, 6’7 275 pounds, 24 bench reps, and a 4.61 forty that was first and second among tight ends. Woods continued to impress at his pro day with a 37.5-inch vertical, 10-foot 9-inch broad jump, 6.78-second three-cone, and a 4.2-second 20-yard shuttle. Jelani would have ranked first for tight ends in these categories if he had participated in these events at the NFL combine.

"If you ever wondered what it would look like if humanity trained a pissed off moose to catch a football, I give you Virginia TE Jelani Woods." - Brett Kollmann

Woods was a graduate transfer to Virginia, where he amassed 44 receptions for 598 yards and eight touchdowns. When targeted, quarterbacks had a 114.6 quarterback rating. Woods sounds like he can be a reliable target for an NFL quarterback. It probably helps that Woods was a quarterback in high school and then transitioned to tight end.

Despite his forty-yard dash time, he didn't look particularly fast on the field. Watching Woods run reminds me of Rob Gronkowski, who ran a 4.68; Jelani seems to lumber out there and finds the open spot in coverage. We are not comparing him to or saying he will be like Gronkowski, just that they both don’t look fast. Defensive backs can be seen bouncing off Woods, and he fights through tackles and hits that would take normal-sized humans out of the game.

Dynasty Outlook

Remember that tight ends don't tend to produce right away. Jelani Woods is a player that probably has to sit and develop for a couple of years. It may just be one of those things where he's sitting around for a few years, and suddenly, this guy comes out of nowhere. We are not saying it will happen, but this is the type of player that this happens to. Just think, Travis Kelsey really didn't break out till he was 27. You would be called crazy if you cut Kelsey after two years.

You can probably draft Woods in the fourth round, and he might even be worth a third-round pick if you like the landing spot.
